Non-Custodial vs Custodial Crypto Payment Gateways: What's the Difference?

Mar 8, 2026 · 5 min read

With custodial gateways, you're trusting a third party with your funds. With non-custodial, you always control your money. Here's why it matters.

When you integrate a crypto payment gateway, one of the most important questions to ask is: who controls the funds between when the customer pays and when you receive them? The answer determines your exposure to counterparty risk, regulatory seizure, and operational delays.

Custodial Gateways: How They Work

In a custodial model, customer payments go into a pool wallet controlled by the payment processor. They hold a balance on your behalf and you request payouts on a schedule (daily, weekly) or manually. This is how CoinGate, BitPay, and many others work.

Risks of Custodial Gateways

  • ✓Counterparty risk: if the processor fails, is hacked, or goes bankrupt, your funds may be frozen or lost
  • ✓Regulatory seizure: a processor account can be frozen by regulators while your individual wallet cannot
  • ✓Payout delays: weekly batch payouts mean your working capital is locked
  • ✓Account suspension: a terms violation freezes your balance without immediate recourse
  • ✓No transparency: you trust their accounting, not a blockchain ledger

Non-Custodial Gateways: How They Work

In a non-custodial model, each invoice generates a unique payment address. When a customer pays, the funds are detected on-chain and immediately forwarded to your own wallet — minus the processing fee. The gateway's infrastructure monitors the blockchain and triggers the webhook, but never holds your funds.

Advantages of Non-Custodial

  • ✓You control your private keys — funds in your wallet, always
  • ✓Instant settlement: funds arrive in your wallet within minutes of confirmation
  • ✓No counterparty risk from the payment processor's financial health
  • ✓Transparent: every transaction is verifiable on the public blockchain
  • ✓No withdrawal queues or approval processes

How Bekena Handles Settlement

Bekena generates unique payment addresses for each invoice. When USDT is sent to that address, our system detects the on-chain transaction, validates the amount, fires the webhook, and forwards the funds directly to your settlement wallet on-chain. Bekena never holds your money — you own the keys, you own the funds.

Note: You can verify every payment independently: take the transaction hash from the webhook payload and look it up on Tronscan or Etherscan. You'll see the funds moving from the customer's wallet to your payout wallet directly.

When Custodial Might Make Sense

Custodial gateways are sometimes preferred when: you need fiat conversion (they convert crypto to USD/EUR before payout), your business operates in a regulated environment that requires a licensed money transmitter, or you want consolidated reporting and don't want to manage wallets. These are real trade-offs. For businesses primarily settling in USDT or BTC, non-custodial is almost always the better choice.
